EARTH QUAKE ALERT: HELP HAITI AND SEND REAL AID FOR THERE EARTH QUAKE!!

LASCAHOBAS, Centre, HT (sentinel.ht) – There was one person injured and significant damage to a school and six homes after a magnitude 4.3 earthquake hit the Central Plateau of Haiti on Saturday afternoon.

Robentz Antoine, 18, was the lone injury during the quake. He was in Lascahobas at the time and was rushedd to the La Colline health center for treatment.

A home in Carrefour Flandé, at the entrance to the town of Lascahobas, five others and a national school in the 4th communal section of Sarrazin in Mirebalais were damaged by the jolt. Three departments, including several towns on the Central Plateau, West and Artibonite, experienced the earthquake.

“Henceforth, no geographic department is immune to earthquakes in Haiti. Haiti is in an active seismic region,” the nation’s civil protection agency reiterated.

The epicenter of the earthquake was not located on any major fault known in Haiti. It was located 11 km southwest of Thomonde and 13 km northeast of Mirebalais (Central Plateau). The quake was recorded at 16:14 local (20:14 gmt) according to the details of the Technical Unit of Seismology (UTS) of Haiti.

The country is crossed by a group of faults, the two most famous of which are the fault of the southern peninsula and the northern fault, which runs along the north coast of Haiti.

Inviting families and communities to continually prepare for seismic risks, Civil Protection says it is committed to continuing to promote existing building seismic standards, not only for construction professionals, but also for households.

It also intends to strengthen public education and awareness campaigns, the response capacities of its structures throughout the country, and to contribute to the strengthening of the seismic monitoring network.

There is a need for institutional arrangements to continue “deepening research and reinforcing appropriate prevention actions”, AlterPresse stressed, after the earthquake of Saturday 3 September 2017, geologist-engineer Claude Preptit, director General of the Bureau of Mines and Energy (Bme) and Principal Officer of the Technical Unit for Seismology (UTS).

On Monday, August 21, 2017, the Seismology Technical Unit alerted to a resurgence of seismic activities in the Nippes (part of Southwestern Haiti).

Almost 46 seismic events occurred between 3 September 2015 and 20 August 2017 in the Nippes, particularly at Anse-à-Veau.

Two earthquakes, of magnitude between 2 and 3, were felt on the morning of Wednesday, August 16, 2017 and in the afternoon of Sunday, August 20, 2017 in Anse-à-Veau. A shock was previously recorded, still at Anse-à-veau, on the evening of Friday, June 16, 2017.

A shock of magnitude 4 on the Richter scale, which occurred on the evening of 13 October 2015 in Anse-a-Veau, created a great panic among the population. It had been felt at Petite Riviere de Nippes, at Baconnois, and at Arnaud. The earthquake of October 13, 2015 was located at 4 km depth and its epicenter located 9 km at sea, north of the town of Anse-à-Veau.
